Kuttey Hindi Movie (2023) Review:
Divided into three eccentrically titled chapters, debutant director Asman Bharadwaj’s ‘Kutti’ starts with a bang and continues to power its screenplay with intriguingly dark, edgy and self-centered characters. Among them are unscrupulous police officers, drug smugglers and even Naxalites. Each has a ulterior motive and their rules are simple – shoot first, ask questions later. The narrative is filled with a battery of characters and their stories and a mildly unpredictable premise in a dog-eat-dog world.
Justifies the title of ‘Kuttey’. Trying too hard at times, Asmaan and his co-writer and filmmaker Pita Vishal Bharadwaj, give us a relentlessly twisting thriller, which throws every trick in the book to confuse and engage the audience. It’s thrilling and entertaining, but not without writing flaws and errors that obviously involve multiple problems. With so many stories and subplots going on at once, some are side-lined.
Among its ensemble cast, picking your favorites is easy. Tabu tops the list. The talented actress embodies Pammi’s many qualities and loves the character immensely. Surrounded by treacherous and bloodthirsty men, she’s the lone badass boss lady who delivers profanity-laden dialogue and also brings some much-needed comic relief. As always, his pitch looks perfect and effortless. Naseeruddin Shah, Konkana Sen Sharma, Radhika Madan, Shardul Bharadwaj and Kumud Mishra give their limited screen time. Arjun Kapoor has more to do as the blatantly immoral Gopal and the actor gives an honest performance, but could do with some more variety in his expressions. The catchy tune of Vishal Bharadwaj’s iconic composition ‘Dhan Te Naan’ enlivens the relentlessly dark and gritty story of ‘Kuttey’ which remains in the background. The film’s original score by Vishal, influenced by Gulzar’s unique songs, blends well with the screenplay without hampering the film’s pace. As a debutant director, Asman Bharadwaj proves his mettle with a highly packed plot and a bunch of talented actors. ‘Kuttey’ is not a fully crafted, dark satire, yet it is a wildly entertaining mishmash of guns, goons and profanity.
