Qala (2022) Hindi Movie Review:
After Karrnesh Sharma’s clean slate Films Bulbul (2020) returns with director Anvita Dutt to continue her initiative to support women telling women’s stories. The film has Tripti Dimri in the front seat with strong support from Swastika Mukherjee and late Irrfan Khan’s son Babil Khan. A fictional period drama about a playback singer, Kaala takes an unknown, untold path in a relationship. Exploring the underlying complexities of the mother-daughter equation looks beyond the obvious, a rare sight in Hindi cinema. The latter either ignored or villainized the fight to the gallery. Art dares to explore the raw, even ugly interiors of seemingly normal relationships with heart-wrenching longings and regrets.
A slow-burn tragedy that builds to a climactic climax, this is a haunting psychological drama set in the 1930s and 40s against a musical backdrop. Kala (Tripti Dimri) a young girl from Himachal hopes to live up to the fame and talent of her famous family of classical singers. “Naam naam aag pandit hona hona naam naam peche bai na”, says her mother (Swastika Mukherjee) sternly, ensuring that her daughter is aware of the weight of expectations. The dominant daughter wants to win over her taskmaster mother and longs for her validation. But the mother is captivated by the divine power in Jagan’s (Babylon) voice. He gave him mother-son affection and chose him (an outsider) as a worthy heir to his family’s inheritance. Kala was advised to marry and live with her husband instead of pursuing a career in film music as it was not for respectable women in those days. Kala sees it as patriarchy, sexism and unfair treatment of women. She feels neglected by her mother, while the mother sees through her daughter’s insecurities and firmly believes that it is only fair to empower Jagan, who is more talented. Kala resorts to questionable means to fulfill her dreams but at a cost. He is haunted and traumatized by his past.
The story slowly opens a Pandora’s box of mysteries as it progresses, oscillating between past and present, regret and anger, love and jealousy. It sees an exciting and twisted mother-daughter dynamic and resolves like a psychological thriller. The beauty of Anvita Dutt’s storytelling and writing lies in its world-building and its depiction of alternative perspectives. You witness a mother-daughter psychological warfare dance as Art’s ambitions collide with her mother’s disdain. Amit Trivedi’s classical music is central to the film and plays an important role in driving the story forward. Apart from Anvita, the songs are beautifully written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, Kausar Munir, Swanand Kirkire and Varun Grover. Singers Sirisha Bhagwatula and Shahid Mallya, who have sung for the lead roles, have done excellent work.
Lighting is skillfully used in the scenes to maintain interest. Kaala’s childhood home in the hills and her adult life in Kolkata, the set design, costumes and color palette are eye-catching. Siddharth Dewan (Cinematography) and Meenal Agarwal (Production Designer) deserve special mention for creating a world that brings compelling unsettling energy and heartache. Although the pace seems motionless several times, inner turmoil and pain find an outlet even in silence.
Last but not least; The three main actors find themselves transported into a tragic world of love, ambition and deception. Tripti Dimri is gorgeous in a retro avatar and effective in some parts but her expression is limited. The beautiful Swastika Mukherjee is absolutely poised and strong as a mother. There is a certain seriousness about Babel, shown by his estranged father. Shows glimpses of what he can do as an actor and the future certainly looks bright for him.
