Salaam Venky is a 2022 Indian Hindi language slice-of-life drama film directed by Revathi. The film is produced by Suraj Singh and Shraddha Aggarwal through their banners Blive Productions and RTK Studios respectively. Starring Kajol and Vishal Jethwa in the lead roles, the film revolves around the true story of a mother who does everything to let her son, who suffers from a disease called Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Revathi and Kajal announced the film on 7 October 2021. Principal photography began on 11 February 2022, with the first schedule taking place in Mumbai. The film releases in theaters on 9 December 2022.

Salaam Venky (2022) Movie Story:
Revathi’s Salaam Venky is based on Venky Srikanth Murthy’s The Last Hurray. The book is inspired by the true story of 24-year-old chess player Kolavenu Venkatesh, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare degenerative disease. The story parallels that of his mother Sujata, who fought valiantly to fulfill her son’s last wish. Medical predictions predicted a life expectancy of 16 years for Venkatesh, but his determination and love for life and his mother’s unwavering commitment saw him survive to the age of 24.
Salaam Venky (2022) Movie Review:
Adapted for the screen by Sameer Arora, Salaam Venki is a mother-son story starring Kajal Sujatha and Vishal Jethwa as their charming, hilarious son Venky. His final wish is to die by euthanasia, which would allow him to donate his organs.
The first half of the 136-minute film mostly unfolds in a hospital room where Venky is connected to machines and tubes. Through flashbacks we see his childhood, his relationships with his peers and his hobbies. Venky loves Hindi films and swears by the line from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand (1971): “Zindegi badi honi chahiye, lambi na” (Life should be lived to the fullest).
At the hospital, Venky is surrounded by caring nursing staff and a kind doctor (Rajeev Khandelwal). His mother, sister (Ridhi Kumar), childhood friends (Aneet Padda) and members of an ashram where he was brought up are his constant companions and visitors.
The second part is mainly about Sujata’s plea, court case and media support for the case. Rahul Bose and Priyamani are opposing lawyers and Ahana Kumra is the television reporter championing this news. Also present are Prakash Raj, Kamal Sadan, Anant Mahadevan and Parvathy T. Aamir Khan makes a strange cameo appearance.
Despite constantly shedding tears, Kajol immerses herself in the role of the devoted mother, especially as she cuddles with and cares for her dead son. Jethwa is the most difficult task. He has to convey physical and mental transformations and degradations, sometimes without uttering a word. As soon as he does this, he surprises you.
Kolavenu Venkatesh died in 2004, the same year Revathi’s Phir Milenge was released. Like its inspiration, the Hollywood film Philadelphia, We Will See You’s themes are based on AIDS and unfair dismissal. Salam Venky also tries to highlight important issues and hopes to start a conversation. The intention is right, but it’s a very sad film that opens a small hole of hope.
